The general objective of this work is to describe the main factors and / or preventive mechanisms of the geriatric depression. This phenomenon not only constitutes an inability to develop a satisfactory aging, but also represents a possible cause of mortality for the elderly population. The review is organized into two major sections of factors “Psychosocial prevention” and “Physical prevention”. Within the first one are the community health programs; Active aging in the intellectual sphere, which is subdivided into volunteer participation and gerontological pedagogy; and the active leisure model. In the second section two other factors are included, these being the eating habits; and the development of physical activity. In conclusion, the central axis of all preventive factors of the geriatric depression is part of the adoption of active aging, understood not only as the realization of new or existing activities in adulthood, but also these are adapted to the characteristics, demands, needs and contexts of each subject
