Abstract: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is considered a Public Health problem due to the high risk of complications, mortality and the economic impact. The objective of this study was to establish the sociodemographic and clinical factors associated with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in patients who are treated in the Cardiovascular Program in a hospital in the city of Cali.
Materials and methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out from the review of 1053 medical records of patients with risk factors for the development of DM2 during 2018. Predictive factors of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus were determined by bivariate logistic regression, presented as odds ratio and its respective 95% confidence interval (95% CI).
Results: The mean age of the diabetic patients was 56 years (SD + 12) and 59.1% were women and they were mostly grouped between 56-65 (35.8%, p = 0.007). After adjustment, the risk of DM2 was higher in people with metabolic syndrome (OR: 27.388 [95% CI: 9.531-119.572], p <0.001), hypercholesterolemia (OR: 24.962 [95% CI: 2.710- 229.956], p = 0.005), overweight (OR: 8.819 [95% CI: 1.088-71.506], p = 0.041), obesity (OR: 7.214 [95% CI: 2.071-25.129], p = 0.002) or hypertriglyceridemia (OR: 5.042 [95% CI: 1.798-14.138], p = 0.002).
Conclusion: In this study it was determined that the predictive factors of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus were: metabolic syndrome, hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, obesity and overweight.
