Classically, the bone has been visualized as a support element, a lever for muscles and locomotion. However, in recent years the complex role of bone as a true endocrine organ, a source of multiple hormones and cytokines, and an important player in the energy balance of the body, has been unraveled, with the understanding of complex axes: fatty tissue, leptin, CNS, bone turnover and bone mass.
