ROLE OF CYTOLOGY IN THE INTRAOPERATIVE DIAGNOSIS OF NEOPLASTIC LESIONS OF THE OVARY AND HISTOLOGICAL CORRELATION

Ovarian neoplasms constitute a heterogeneous group of lesions that cannot be reliably diagnosed clinically or with auxiliary methods. For this reason intraoperative cytology becomes important to provide diagnoses and define surgical behaviors. In this publication we want to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of intraoperative cytology in ovarian neoplasms. We studied 84 cases in a 10-year period.
Cytohistological correlation was performed and intraoperative diagnoses were grouped into: “benign”, “borderline”, “malignant” and “delayed”. Intraoperative diagnoses were made in 67% of the cases and high percentages of sensitivity and specificity. 85.7% were benign lesions, 3.6% borderline and 10.7% malignant.
One third of the cases was differred for a specific diagnosis: borderline tumors versus carcinomas, and to define primary or secondary origin. Finally we concluded that intraoperative cytology in ovarian lesions is an effective method which allows diagnoses with a high degree of certainty.
