CONGENITAL PYRIFORM APERTURE STENOSIS: FIRST PERUVIAN CASE REPORT
Keywords:
newborn, pyriform aperture stenosis, respiratory distress syndrome, nasal obstructionAbstract
Congenital pyriform aperture stenosis (CPAS) is an infrequent entity characterized by an overgrowth of the nasal process
of the maxilla, with the consequent increase in upper airway resistance. We aim to perform the first report of CPAS in a
Peruvian newborn. Our patient had respiratory distress and cyclical cyanosis. CT scan images revealed a nasal pyriform
aperture diameter of 6.5 mm. The patient did not improve with medical treatment (suction, nasal saline, and high-flow
nasal cannula). Unfortunately, in Peru, corrective surgery or dilation techniques are not performed for patients with
CPAS. Our patient underwent a tracheostomy and was managed expectantly. In conclusion, it is essential to increase
awareness about CPAS among neonatologists. It is also imperative to introduce non-medical approaches for this condition
in Peruvian health institutions.
