Introduction: Authoral endogamy, endogenous publication or self-publishing is defined as the scientific publication in
a journal by a member of the editorial committee of the same journal. The objective of the study was to determine the
presence of authorial endogamy in some student medical scientific journals in Latin America, from 2018 to 2021.
Methods: Observational, descriptive, bibliometric study. A search of student medical journals was carried out, to determine
the composition of the editorial committees, the web page of the selected journals was accessed and to assess a probable
change in the years evaluated, the Wayback Machine tool was used (https://archive. org/web/), which allows evaluating
web pages in different time slices. The results were expressed in percentages and frequency measures and for the bivariate
analysis the Mann Whitney U test and chi square (p<0.05) were used.
Results: A total of 672 articles published in 6 student medical scientific journals in Latin America were evaluated, the
prevalence of authorial endogamy was 7.44%, found more frequently in original articles 9.25% (n=33), belonging to
the editorial board 47.27% (n= 26), and co-author position 42.44% (n=22), the number of days from submission to
acceptance were statistically lower in inbred articles (p=0.001)
Conclusion: The presence of authorial inbreeding in student medical journals was low, this finding being more frequent
in original articles, coming mostly from the editorial board and the co-author as signatory, in addition, inbred articles
presented fewer days of editorial process.
